Masterwork Series

Throughout the fall semester we will be examining four magnificent choral masterworks. The first half of each presentation will be a lecture led by Series host, Jean-Sébastien Vallée who will help participants to discover the complexity and motivation of these compositions through an examination of their music, libretto, style, and historical contexts.

Prior to the first meeting, participants will receive a guide and will be invited to listen to the selected samples in each of the masterworks at their own pace.

The second half of each session will take the form of an informal discussion and chat-back focusing on the performance practice of the works with prominent guest artists.

Wednesday, September 23, 7 PM
A German Requiem — Johannes Brahms

Guest: Alexander Shelley, Conductor – National Arts Centre Orchestra
"“Even the beautiful must die” proclaim the first words of Schiller’s poem Nänie. And beauty is what Brahms brought to both his setting of that poem and to his life-affirming and, for me, almost humanistic German Requiem." - Alexander Shelley

Wednesday, October 21, 7 PM
Missa Solemnis – L.V. Beethoven

Guest: Duain Wolfe, Chorusmaster - Chicago Symphony Orchestra
“The architecture of the many components boggles the mind, while the sheer beauty of the piece leaves me breathless.” - Duain Wolfe

Wednesday, November 18, 7 PM
Elijah – Felix Mendelssohn

Guest: Russell Braun, baritone
“What captivates me the most about this prophet is the rawness, which Mendelssohn captured, and the pure humanity of his struggles, his commitment to the journey more so than the goal itself.” - Russell Braun

Wednesday December 16, 7 PM
Christmas Oratorio – Johann Sebastian Bach

Guests: Suzie LeBlanc, soprano and expert in early music
"I have performed the Christmas Oratorio cantatas with one singer to a part, and also as soloist when a choir is present. It’s always a pleasure to sing "Flöst, main Heiland" with oboe obligato and an all time favorite of mine "Nur ein Wink von seinen Händen"". - Suzie LeBlanc, C.M.
