The OCS presents Johann Sebastien Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, the series of cantatas that is a perennial festive favourite illuminating through the composer’s incomparable scoring and his concise settings of Biblical texts, the original Christmas story.
The Bach Christmas Oratorio will be the Choral Society’s first live performances since the imposition of Covid-related health measures and will open the OCS’s 2021 – 2022 season. Capturing the joy and solemnity of the year-end holidays, the performances will “celebrate the return of live music and its vital role in our lives,” says OCS Artistic Director Jean-Sébastien Vallée. The concert will feature the Oratorio’s first, third, fifth and sixth cantatas, each corresponding to a day in the Christmas liturgical calendar, including the story of Christ’s birth; His worship by the shepherds; Herod’s search for the Child; and the visit of the Magi, or the Epiphany. The concert will be the perfect complement to the start of the holiday season.
