Based in Montreal, she is heard regularly as a soloist and chorister with some of Canada’s most celebrated ensembles, such as the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal (SMAM), la Chapelle de Québec, les Violons du Roy, the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul (A&P), and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal (OSM). Stephanie is at ease in many styles, eras, and genres of music, and particularly specializes in music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. A prolific and versatile performer, she has been deemed at turns “angelic” and “fiery” (Montreal Gazette). Stephanie’s recent performance highlights include a concert of female composers, “l’Italie Baroque au Féminin”, with guest conductor Suzie LeBlanc (SMAM); a “gender-bending” Messiah, singing arias usually sung by tenors (A&P); Richard Strauss’s Deutsche Motette for a cappella 16-part choir and soloists (Musica Orbium); Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles (Voces Boreales); Haydn’s Nelson Mass (OSM); the Opus-Prize nominated “Visages de Purcell” with Arion Baroque Orchestra (SMAM); and her National Arts Centre debut, singing Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (SMAM). Stephanie sings weekly with the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, where she has performed as a soloist in various orchestral masterpieces, including Bach’s Passions and Mass in B Minor, Mozart’s Requiem and Great Mass in C, and in contemporary choral works such as Arvo Pärt’s Passio, and David Lang’s Little Matchgirl Passion. In addition to many live radio broadcasts on the BBC, CBC and Radio-Canada, Stephanie can be heard on recordings on the Atma, Analekta and Naxos labels. As Lydie-Anne in the world premiere of Les Feluettes (March/Bouchard) with Opera de Montreal, critic Richard Turp declared his performance “both profoundly touching and utterly compelling, his vocal poise and theatrical aplomb constantly rewarding.” Daniel reprised his role with Pacific Opera Victoria and Edmonton Opera. At the forefront of Canada’s contemporary music scene, Daniel performs in Soundstreams 2021 season in the fully staged digital production of Garden of Vanished Pleasures, based on the texts of English artist and queer rights activist Derek Jarman, with music by Cecilia Livingston and directed by Tim Albery. Daniel starred as Ochre in Turning Point Ensemble’s 2018 premiere of The Mute Canary (Komorous) at the New Opera festival in Ostrava, Czech Republic, followed by performances in Vancouver. This season, Daniel is a soloist in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Ottawa Choral Society and in 2022, performs Bach Cantatas with Montreal’s Pallade Musica Ensemble Baroque. Canadian concert performances include Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with Grand Philharmonic Choir/Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, as well as Bach’s St. John Passion with Ottawa Choral Society, Messiah with Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Chamber Choir and Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Daniel has curated engaging programmes including “The Dark Side of Love” with Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, featuring arias by Rossini and Handel, and “Death by Chocolate” (works by Purcell) with Winnipeg’s Camerata Nova. European engagements for this exceptional artist include performances with Musica Fiorita, Ensemble Diapsalma, Le Concert Spirituel, and the Schlossmediale Festival. Daniel has performed baroque repertoire with many of Canada’s most prestigious ensembles, including Bach’s Mass in G Minor at National Arts Centre with Bernard Labadie, Conductor. As a recipient of the Virginia Parker awarded by Canada Council for the Arts, Daniel toured Atlantic and Central Canada with pianist Stephen Runge in a concert entitled “Sanctuary in Song”, featuring works by Finzi, Britten, Butterworth and Vaughan Williams. Read More Daniel Cabena countertenor Read More Asitha Tennekoon tenor and Evangelist Sri Lankan tenor Asitha Tennekoon has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s most impressive and versatile singing artists. He drew critical acclaim as Paul in Tapestry Opera/Scottish Opera’s Rocking Horse Winner, receiving the 2017 Dora Award for Best Male Performance. On the concert stage Asitha is known for performing a wide variety of repertoire, from the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions to premiering new works. He has been a guest soloist with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Chorus Niagara, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Grand Philharmonic Choir, Toronto Bach Festival, and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In 2021/22, Asitha performs in “Rivers of Grief: A Journey through the Underworld”, with Vancouver’s re:Naissance Opera, joins colleagues in “Hasalala Danxalax: Marion Newman & Friends” at UBC Chan Centre, and debuts with Vancouver Bach Choir in Britten’s St. Nicolas Cantata. After months of pandemic postponements, Asitha looks forward to debuts with Edmonton Opera as Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte and with Canadian Opera Company, as First Priest in Die Zauberflöte. During the pandemic, Asitha performed with Tapestry Opera’s Box Concerts initiative, which brought live music to outdoor spaces in Toronto, including frontline workers and care home residents. Asitha recently played the role of The Knave of Hearts in a filming of Elizabeth Raum’s The Garden of Alice with Pacific Opera Victoria and participated in Calgary Opera’s workshop of Namwayut with an Indigenous-led team of artists exploring new, generative paths of opera creation. In addition to his artistic abilities, this year Asitha has taken an administrative role as a co-founder of Amplified Opera (AO), the Toronto -based Indie opera company that seeks to place artists at the centre of public discourse. Read More Asitha Tennekoon tenor and Evangelist Read More Clayton Kennedy baritone Known for his “powerful singing” and “considerable mastery of diction”, baritone Clayton Kennedy has had an eclectic career in baroque and early music, has premiered contemporary works of Canadian composers, as well as collaborated with world-renowned artists, studios and producers. In the field of early music and oratorio, he has appeared as a soloist on several occasions with Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montreal (SMAM), as well as Ensemble Caprice, the Choir of the Church of St. Andrew & St. Paul, Bande Montréal Baroque, I Musici de Montréal, Ensemble Vocal Katimavik, Les Idées Heureuses, Ensemble Telemann, Les Boréades, St. Lawrence Choir, University of King’s College Choir and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (MSO). He has had multiple appearances at the Lamèque International Baroque Festival of Music and frequently been a soloist in the Arte Musica Foundation’s The Complete Cantatas of J.S. Bach series. He has also sang in many Passions by J.S. Bach, including the Opus-award winning Matthäus-Passion with the MSO, in the roles of Petrus and Pontifex. He made his MSO debut as baritone in Faure’s Requiem in 2013. Clayton premiered the titular role in John Plant’s contemporary opera “I Will Fly Like a Bird: a Tribute to Robert Dziekanski”, receiving warm reviews from the Chronicle Herald and Opera Canada Magazine, which recently named it one of the “Best Operas of the Decade”. Clayton also joined Ensemble La Nef for an Opus award winning album, as well as a tour of Quebec, the Maritimes (via Musique Royale) and Western Canada for a program entitled “Sea Songs & Shanties”, and contributed to the soundtracks of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Rogue video games with many of the same musicians. Clayton also sings with the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim choir on Leonard Cohen’s album “You Want It Darker”. He recently collaborated with composer Sebastian Hutchings in premiering and recording a revised song cycle for baritone, double bass, cello and drum kit, titled “Fury”, premiered at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He works frequently with composer Andre Pappathomas in original works that feature heavy elements of improvisation. He was bass soloist in the Monteverdi Vespers with SMAM, the NAC Orchestra and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet at the National Arts Center in Ottawa.
